The feature allows you to join meetings, but instead of showing yourself on the camera, you can have an avatar does the job for you. As revealed by Microsoft Tech Community officer Avery Salumbides in a blog post, the feature has already been rolling out to public preview by end of March 2023. So, if the timeline is correct, we could see a general availability release by May.  So, yes, you can use Teams’ in-app avatars now, but only if you join the Public Preview and let Microsoft experiments with the feature on your desktop. If you’re still curious, here’s how to do that. Keep in mind that if you’re on your Teams is handled by your work/school admins, you may need to get in touch with them to join the insiders.

How to use in-app 3D avatars in Teams

  1. On your Teams screen, select the three dots (Settings and more) on the upper left of your screen.
  2. Select About ➜ Public preview.
  3. If Microsoft selects your device to test out the new feature, reboot the app, then select Apps on your left screen.
  4. Search for Avatars for Teams third-party app & hit Download.
  5. Open the app, then + ➜ Create new. You’ll also see options to Duplicate or Customize.
  6. After customizing your avatar, select Use Avatar.
  7. To join a meeting as your Avatar, once logged into a meeting, turn your camera off and head to Effects and Avatars, then select what you’ve made.
  8. Click Join now. In other news, Microsoft seems to be confirming weeks-lasting rumors that Redmond officials have been working closely to develop a new-gen Teams 2.0, which is claimed to be faster and more energy-efficient.  Other than Teams’ 3D avatar, what other features do you think would be a great addition to the app?
