To speed up the upgrade process, Microsoft is now offering Windows 11 to Windows 10 version 22H2 users via an OOBE experience. The most recent version of Windows 11, the 2022 update (22H2), is now widely available but still buggy and rough around the edges. That being said, there is also good news if you are using Microsoft’s Windows 11 on a Mac. Free virtualization tools have been updated and improved.

Microsoft updated its free Windows 11 VMs

Following the recent release of new free Windows 11 virtual machines last month, the tech giant is back with another update. In fact, Windows 11 Development Environment 2212 is now available for download in four virtualization software versions. If you want to take it for a spin, you can actually download a free Windows 11 virtual machine for VMWare, second-gen Hyper-V, Parallels, and VirtualBox. An important detail to keep in mind is that official Windows 11 virtual machines from Microsoft need about 20GB of space. If you are wondering why such a hefty package, know that and includes tools such as:

Windows 11 Enterprise SKU (evaluation) Visual Studio 2022 Community Edition with UWP, .NET Desktop, Azure, and Windows App SDK for C# workloads enabled Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 enabled with Ubuntu installed Windows Terminal installed Developer mode enabled

The Redmond tech company says the virtual machines are made for customers that want to quickly start building Windows applications. To achieve that, they will be using the latest versions of Windows, the developer tools, SDKs, and samples which are ready to go. Not to mention the fact that you could also look at this as a quick, easy, and free way to check out what Windows 11 and its developer toolbox have to offer. We remind you that Microsoft has allowed using its latest VMs for free and without activation until March 5, 2023, while the previous version is valid until January 10, 2023. After that date, Windows 11 will ask you to enter a genuine license key to continue using the virtual machine. As a little tip, please keep in mind that you can still use Windows 7 keys to activate Windows 11, just ensure the editions match.
